Contraceptives: The Ring
When I asked my gynecologist about contraceptive alternatives, she offered two options: the pill and Nuva Ring.
I asked her to help me out in choosing the best for me. According to her experience, the pill is being developed to offer more trustworthiness in avoiding a pregnancy. Nevertheless, this option requires consistency and if you are not this kind of person it becomes risky. On the other hand you have the secondary effects caused by hormones, that we all know, such as weight gain, mood changes, among others.
Immediately I remembered my friends' stories about the pill. Once one of my friends forgot to take the pill when she was on holiday and spent two days completely stressed because she wasn't able to buy the "second day pill" without a prescription. Luckily when she returned home she was still on time to buy it, since you can take it up to 72 hours after the day you forgot to take the pill.
Another friend of mine who was taking the pill for years and was starting a new career was all of a sudden pregnant. This changed her life completely as she hadn't planned to have a baby in this phase of her life.
Knowing myself, I knew it would be hard for me to get used to the routine of taking the pill and I didn't want to be constantly asking myself: "Did I take it or not?". So I asked the doctor to explain to me more about Nuva Ring.
Nuva Ring is a vaginal ring of monthly use. It does not require to constantly stressed about it as it is inserted and remains inside for 21 days. After this period you take it out and stay without it for a week. During this week you'll get your period and after this week you insert a new one. Due to its low dose of hormones, you have less possibilities of having secondary effects.
At first the whole idea was a bit weird for me, specially coming from Latin America where people are more conservative but I decided to try it and found it very confortable. You don't really feel it and it proved to be and effective contraceptive (99% reliable). Also, it helped me regulate my period and I don't experience strong cramps anymore. The best part is that it costs more or less the same as the contraceptive pills and to me it's more secure.

However, before deciding about contraceptives, always consult your gynecologist, who will determine which one's the best for you.
